When people think of rodeos, they’re likely to imagine a soundtrack of country music for the pictures of bucking broncos and bull riders in their minds. But at the Hip Hop Cowboys Annual Spring Rodeo, it’s a lively blend of blues, old-school hip-hop, and rap that fills Mesquite Arena after the rodeo has reached its pulse-pounding conclusion. The rodeo itself inspires hollers with events including team roping, ladies barrel racing, and steer wrestling. After the saddles and equine cowboy hats are hung up, hip-hop great Mystikal and Southern soul and R&B crooner Sir Charles Jones take the stage. A frequent collaborator with fellow hip-hop heavyweights such as Ludacris and Lil Wayne, Mystikal moves hips and feet with a fusion of funk, soul, and rap most famously combined on his 2000 hit “Shake Ya Ass.” Conversely, slow-jam king Sir Charles Jones woos eardrums with smooth, soulful pipes on tracks such as “Is There Anybody Lonely?” and “On My Own Again.”

The uniquely entertaining evening is presented by Hip Hop Cowboys Inc., an organization aimed at uniting two disparate entertainment worlds while focusing on youth and community programs.
