Fat and sparkling hollow-bodied guitars, an armada of upright basses, howling-wolf vocals, and pompadours loaded with pomade bounce through downtown Austin during the fifth annual Revival Festival. Presented by rockabilly-ready drum- and ax-crafters Gretsch, the annual party fills two stages with 10 boisterous acts for a day of unbridled hootenanny. Headlining psychobilly Jim Heath and his famed outfit preaches to his fervid congregation at the front of The Reverend Horton Heat in a set of high-speed rants and raves as the main stage morphs into a hoppin’ chicken house. Other main-stage haymakers include the lycanthropic Elvis sounds of Nekromantix, the fretless upright-bass serenades of The Stray Cats’ Lee Rocker, and the toe-pumping tones of LA trio Three Bad Jacks.

Four other acts take the Gretsch stage, including Rosie Flores, whose hot guitar licks and sassy vocals hold echoes of Wanda Jackson. Fellow sponsors Pabst Blue Ribbon and Sailor Jerry keep poodle skirts twirling with high-octane nectar.
