In a Nutshell

Local and national comics elicit guffaws as visitors lubricate chuckles with beer or long island iced teas

The Fine Print

Comedy has long been used to subvert the established order, shedding light on modern life's pervasive absurdities and fomenting distrust of potentially seltzer-filled boutonnieres. Challenge flower-loving instincts with this GrouponLive deal to Riddles Comedy Club in Alsip. The club has a two-drink minimum per person at each show, but the drinks included in this deal count toward the requirement. Choose between the following options:

  • For $19, you get a comedy night for two (up to a $95 total value), which includes:

    • Two general-admission tickets to any regular show (up to a $25 value, including all fees)
    • Two drinks (up to a $20 value)
    • Four general-admission tickets to any subsequent show (up to a $50 value, including all fees)

  • For $32, you get a comedy night for four (up to a $190 total value), which includes:

    • Four general-admission tickets to any regular show (up to a $50 value, including all fees)
    • Four drinks (up to a $40 value)
    • Eight general-admission tickets to any subsequent show (up to a $100 value, including all fees)

As Riddles Comedy Club finalizes its October lineup, Steve Kramer helps round out September by transforming his laconic Kansas City drawl into a phantasmagoria of celebrity impressions on September 21 and 22, building on their pitch perfection by using them in service of larger jokes. Al Pacino might duel with Regis Philbin on Hollywood Squares. Arnold Schwarzenegger might burst into a rendition of Vanilla Ice. Notes of Christopher Walken, John Travolta, and Gilbert Gottfried pervade Kramer's act in more covert ways as well, such as how men hear themselves as Sean Connery when they hit on women, whereas the women hear a deranged mountain man. A self-taught guitarist and animator, Steve's "Stanford's" song is played each week on The Johnny Dare Morning Show and his animated reality show Stanford and Sons was accepted into Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival.

On September 28 and 29, Second City inhabitant Derick Lengwenus shows off the kind-of-blue comedy that won him the Best Comedy award at the Montreal Fringe Festival and the Audience Choice Award at its Just for Laughs Festival. Derick brings with him a troop of cops, soccer hooligans, and self-created characters, such as Dr. Avocado, the inventor and sole practitioner of organic surgery, and Eddie, a painfully shy British software engineer. Derick's strict German father makes frequent appearances, too, as Lengwenus affectionately imitates his belly-out stance and thick Teutonic accent, whether he's critiquing artistic decisions to color a monkey purple or off-handedly destroying the illusion of Big Bird.

Riddles Comedy Club

For more than 20 years, comedians of all levels of notoriety have peddled their laugh-inducing verbal wares on Riddles Comedy Club's stage. An airbrushed city skyline sits behind the corner stage where such comedians as Jeff Dunham, Louie Anderson, and Drew Carey slung jokes to side-split audiences. A full bar with overhanging LCD TVs dispenses alcoholic and nonalcoholic whistle-wetters in between sets. Additionally, Riddles' lot houses a free parking lot for those driving from far-off locales or patrons who can't find a limo service that takes knock-knock jokes as payment.
