Critically acclaimed modern comic musical surprises audiences with whimsical premise, innovative soundtrack & adept young cast

Ancient Greeks laid the foundations for contemporary theatre by composing the first plays and stealing the first Tony Awards from Mount Olympus. Celebrate theatrical progress with today’s deal: for $25, you get a theatre outing for two (up to a $51.40 total value, including HST and fees), which includes:

Choose from the following performances: * Thursday, November 10, at 7:30 p.m. * Friday, November 11, at 7:30 p.m. * Saturday, November 12, at 2 p.m.<p>

In its 42nd season, innovative Theatre Passe Muraille joins Acting Up Stage Company, a troupe dedicated to advancing Canadian theatre, to stage the whimsical, uproarious musical Ride the Cyclone. Lauded by the Vancouver Sun as “a work of genius that defies description,” Ride the Cyclone follows the fate of six teens in a small-town choir, who meet their demise while riding a rickety rollercoaster at a travelling fair. After the accident, the six teens enjoy the relatively rare privilege of expressing themselves after death, a right usually granted only to holograms of the wealthy. In wildly original song-and-dance routines, the teens attempt to accept their abrupt deaths while sharing tales that illuminate the angst of their generation. The talented young actors masterfully balance dark comedy with light steps as they sing and dance their way through a play that won the SummerWorks Prize for Production and the NOW magazine Audience Choice Award in 2010.

Housed in a historic heritage building downtown, the Theatre Passe Muraille ensconces audiences in a 180-seat theatre as intimate as Hamlet’s uncomfortably revealing soliloquies. Once a bakery, the building still has its original loading doors and stable windows outside. Inside, exposed brick walls and wood floors lend the space an industrial, vintage appeal.

Theatre Passe Muraille offers pay-what-you-can admission to Saturday matinee performances, with a recommended ticket price of $15.

The seats were in the balcony, which under normal circumstances would have been fine. However, the special effect was a heavy fog, which just hung in front of our seats and I found it hard to breathe, as I have asthma. My husband, who does not have asthma,, said the air was even heavy for him. The house manager kindly switched us to some obstructed seats, and we could not see most of what was going on, on the stage. There was still heaviness in the air. We left at intermission. It was an awful experience. Theatres should have to include this type of special effect in their advertising, not as you are walking into the theatre.
