Rollins College’s Annie Russell Theatre continues its 80th season with a pair of thought-provoking productions. The Pulitzer Prize–winning Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz tells the enchanting story of Cuban immigrants running a cigar factory in Florida. A tradition in Cuban workplaces, the factory laborers hire a storyteller to read to them while they work. As the newly hired lector reads the novel Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy’s tale begins to intertwine with the workers’ lives, opening up a fantastical world of drama and romance. Striking a different chord, Oliver Goldsmith’s farcical comedy She Stoops to Conquer transports audiences back to the 18th century, where aristocrat Kate Hardcastle, who was played by Annie Russell in a 1912 performance, pretends to be a common maid in order to woo a wealthy suitor who shies away from women of stature. Kate’s undercover plan sets the stage for mistaken-identity hijinks and ensuing romance.

Rollins College's Annie Russell Theatre

In 1931, Mary Louise Curtis Bok gave her friend Annie Russell a unique gift: her very own theater. Since its first production, which starred Annie herself in 1932, the Annie Russell Theatre hasn’t had a dark season and has become one of Florida’s longest-running theaters. As an integral part of Rollins College’s department of theater and dance, “The Annie” has also churned out a number of notable graduates, including Buddy Ebsen, Dana Ivey, Christopher Fitzgerald, and an Emmy-winning lighting designer. The theater’s rich history helped it earn a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and a visit from Annie Russell's ghost.

The Groupon Guide to: Choosing a Jersey Number

Professional athletes are faced with many difficult decisions, such as choosing to which charity to donate their entire salary or settling on a jersey number. If you get picked to play big ball with the big boys and big girls, use these helpful tips for selecting your definitive digits:

  • Choose a number that has meaning to you, such as the number of teeth inside your mouth.

  • Go with a number that gives you an interesting story to tell the sports reporters whenever they ask you "Hey champ, could you tell us why you picked that uniform number again?" This number could be the amount of people you'd kiss if you had no respect for personal boundaries.

  • Pick a random number, such as 9 or maybe even 10. It's up to you as long as it's either 9 or 10!

  • No one has ever gotten away with a three-digit number … yet.

  • Do you have a lucky number? If you don't, you should choose one now because you'll need one—most professional athletes have incredibly short careers and aren't qualified to do anything else.

Did Shaquille O'Neal choose number 32 because that was the number of teeth he had at the time? Find out in today's Groupon Guide.
