In a Nutshell

Acclaimed musical on national tour spins the true story of charismatic young con man Frank Abagnale Jr. with a swinging ‘60s score

The Fine Print

Musicals have always brought impossible dreams to life onstage, from cats that can talk to humans who can sing in public without feeling weird. Escape from reality with this GrouponLive deal to see Catch Me If You Can at Ruth Eckerd Hall. For $35, you get one ticket for seating in rows V–DD on Saturday, December 8 (up to a $70 value, including all fees). Choose between the 2 p.m. or the 8 p.m. showtime. Doors open one hour before each show.

The Plot

Based largely on the 2002 Steven Spielberg film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, the Tony-winning musical Catch Me If You Can brings the true tale of charismatic teen con artist Frank Abagnale Jr. to life. By the time he was 19, the “one-man Disneyland” (as he introduces himself in song) had successfully impersonated an airline pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer, as well as stolen millions of dollars in forged checks. As he cycles through madcap transformations and schemes, FBI bank-fraud agent Carl Hanratty doggedly pursues him, determined to capture the wily teenager and save his own reputation.

The Sights

A fresh-faced touring cast swings through sets that sometimes recall the eye-popping world of a 1960s dance show or late-night variety program. At the back of the stage, an enormous LED screen colors the action with cartoony backgrounds that highlight the plot’s slapstick aspects.

Showstoppers

The score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman—who also penned the music to Broadway’s Hairspray—creates a soundtrack trimmed with the glitz of the early 1960s. “Jet Set” places a sequined Abagnale at the center of a kick line of Pan Am stewardesses and pilots. His law-bound foil, FBI agent Hanratty, frantically keeps up with an ensemble of gray-flannel suits in the jazzy “Don’t Break the Rules,” letting actor Merritt David Janes demonstrate his “laser beam energy” and ability to “high kick like a Rockette,” as the Providence Phoenix put it.

The cast performs “Jet Set”:
