In a Nutshell

Award-winning pianist and cellist each take the stage during separate concerts presented by a musical club founded in 1901

The Fine Print

Music is a force powerful enough to calm a baby, soothe a wild beast, or compel the two to dance with each other. Be overcome by this GrouponLive deal to see San Antonio Tuesday Musical Club presents Joyce Yang or Darrett Adkins at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church. For $10, you get one ticket for general admission (up to a $20 value). Doors open one hour before each show. Choose between the following performances:

  • Joyce Yang on Tuesday, January 22, at 2 p.m.
  • Darrett Adkins with pianist Jonathan Feldman on Tuesday, April 9, at 2 p.m.

Students with ID are admitted free.

With a bright smile, Joyce Yang sits at her piano, stretching calmly before diving into Rachmaninoff with focused abandon. It’s obvious that she loves the music—the act of playing, the emotion buried and bubbling in each note. Lauded by the Los Angeles Times for her “virtuosity and sensitivity,” Yang honed her musical chops in her native South Korea before graduating from Juilliard, where she won 2010’s Arthur Rubinstein Prize. Such praise is almost par for the course. The pianist also earned the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2010 and has traversed the globe to dazzle onlookers and make her piano tuners glow with pride at the New York Philharmonic, DC’s Kennedy Center, and Zurich’s Tonhalle.

Both classical and contemporary melodies waft from the cello of Darrett Adkins. The celebrated musician has played for rapt audiences across the world, including such eminent figures as the King of Norway. Adkins has collaborated on eight albums brimming with works from Schubert to Luciano Berio, but he is just as at home teaching as he is performing. A member of the faculties at Juilliard, Aspen Music Festival and School, and Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Adkins shares his hard-earned expertise as he instructs students how to develop a commanding stage presence like the one he wields. He will be accompanied by Jonathan Feldman, a leading chamber music and accompaniment pianist.

San Antonio Tuesday Musical Club

The Tuesday Musical Club has corralled accomplished musicians to celebrate the art of music and stretch appreciation throughout the community for more than a century. During the annual Artist Series, four classical concerts punctuate the year, with past performers such as Isaac Stern, Arcadi Volodos, and Angelika Kirchschlager. In addition to introducing concertgoers to world-renowned musicians, the club showers special attention upon young performers, offering up a Young Artists Competition and a Junior Tuesday Musical Club, which fosters an early appreciation for complex arrangements and teaches young ones why some songs are better without artistic direction from Jay-Z.

The Groupon Guide to: Having a Secret

Every interesting person has a deep, dark secret that they can only reveal to their therapist or a group of teenagers playing truth or dare. If you're in need of a fascinating secret, try one of these on for size:

  • "When I was a child, I threw a rock at a parked car. I've never felt so alive."

  • "I spent 14 years in prison … doing research."

  • "I'm afraid of dogs. They're almost too beautiful to look at!"

  • "Once a week I dress up as my father and then I'm the one who can eat as much meat as he wants."

  • "Sometimes I give a fake name at restaurants just to be funny and because I like tiny, stupid lies."

  • "I have a second family in Delaware. My husband there is also named Dave. I call him Double Dave."

Where does Double Dave live? Find out in today’s Groupon Guide.
