San Francisco Chinese New Year Festival and Parade
The Hilton San Francisco Financial District, located just one block from Chinatown, transforms its grounds into prime parade-viewing real estate during the annual Chinese New Year Parade. For 2014, the three-hour celebration ushers in the Year of the Horse, which is recognized throughout Chinese culture as a symbol of travel, competition, and victory. Attendees can snag seats in the bandstand just outside the hotel, where they'll witness the parade reach its culmination with a flurry of spellbinding colors, extravagant floats, and elaborate costumes. Marching bands and fleet-footed dancers infuse the celebration with a healthy dose of music and athleticism, all while the newly crowned Miss Chinatown USA and her court preside over the festivities. But the true star of the night is Gum Lung, a 268-foot Golden Dragon manned by more than 100 martial artists and supervised by a group of bouncers wearing knight’s armor.
