The Scouting Report

In a tournament that's already seen its fair share of upsets, the World Baseball Classic reaches its culmination on Tuesday night at AT&T Park with a clash between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. This past Saturday, Puerto Rico—an underdog since the beginning—toppled the two-time (and only) WBC champion Japan to earn a shot at the 2013 title. The Dominican Republic will be in the other dugout, and they will enter the championship with an unblemished 7-0 record, following a semifinal victory over the Netherlands. The championship will mark the third meeting between Puerto Rico and the Dominicans in this year's World Baseball Classic; the Dominican Republic won the previous two meetings and has yielded just two total runs to the Puerto Rican squad.

World Baseball Classic

First held in 2006 and subsequently in 2009 and 2013, the World Baseball Classic serves as the premier international baseball tournament, bringing top players from around the world to represent their home countries and territories for the title of the true world champs. In 2013, 28 nations send more than 800 players to the field, staging the tournament's action in 11 locations across the globe in round-robin and single-elimination contests. Japan emerged as the Classic's victor in both 2006 and 2009.
