The Scouting Report

In a tournament to crown the world's best baseball team, the third chapter of the World Baseball Classic reaches its culmination on Tuesday night at AT&T Park with a spirited clash between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. This past Saturday, Puerto Rico—an underdog since the beginning—toppled the two-time (and only) WBC champion Japan with a 3-1 victory in the semifinals. Across the diamond, the Dominican Republic enters the matchup with a flawless 7-0 record. In fact, two of those seven victories came against Puerto Rico, who managed to score just two runs against the Dominicans' dominant pitching staff.

World Baseball Classic

First held in 2006 and subsequently in 2009 and 2013, the World Baseball Classic serves as the premier international baseball tournament, bringing top players from around the world to represent their home countries and territories for the title of the true world champs. In 2013, 28 nations send more than 800 players to the field, staging the tournament's action in 11 locations across the globe in round-robin and single-elimination contests. Japan emerged as the Classic's victor in both 2006 and 2009.
