In a Nutshell

Lauded Hawaiian musicians helm ukuleles and slack-key guitars during a holiday concert that also features a Polynesian dance troupe

The Fine Print

Nothing can match the thrill of seeing a concert in person, not even watching it on high-definition Blu-ray or listening to it on a high-definition parrot. Get out of your cage with this GrouponLive deal to see the Christmas Kanikapila Tour with Herb Ohta Jr., Keoki Kahumoku, and Chino Montero at Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall. For $15, you get one general-admission ticket for Friday, December 14, at 7 p.m. (up to a $30.94 value, including all fees). Doors open at 6 p.m.

By the time he was 3, Herb Ohta Jr. was already playing the ukulele, the treasured Hawaiian instrument mastered by his revered musician father. Since then, the Hawaiian music man has racked up several awards and recorded nine solo albums that showcase an inimitable blend of Brazilian, R&B, and jazz, all filtered through the gentle resonations of the guitar’s smaller cousin.

When he’s not helming his nonprofit Center for Hawaiian Music Studies and teaching Hawaiian music workshops, Keoki Kahumoku can usually be found performing. The fifth-generation slack-key guitarist and ukulele expert, whose signature finger-style playing was showcased on five Grammy-winning compilation albums of Hawaiian music, revels in sharing the culture of his homeland with listeners, including fiddler crabs intent on taking up a new instrument. Ohta and Kahumoku are joined by the lilting tenor of Chino Montero. The skillful guitarist and crooner has helped introduce the world to Hawaii’s distinct music through the songs “Island Paradise” and “Ke Aloha ‘O Anna” and tours to destinations such as China, Brazil, and Germany.

Iaorana te Otea augments the evening with a flurry of Polynesian dances. Moving to chants or drums, the UCSB dance troupe executes traditional moves from the Hawaiian hula and the Tahitian ote’a, dazzling the audience with its undulating swaying and wordless storytelling.

Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall

Named for the famed German soprano, Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall pays homage to a wealth of musicians during its slate of concerts. Throughout the year, the USBC music venue welcomes gospel choirs and symphonies to its stage, as well as wind ensembles that double as the venue’s air conditioning system.
