In a Nutshell

Charles Dickens's classic Christmas tale gets a rousing musical update from a venerable theater company

The Fine Print

Theater challenges audiences by blending the real and the imaginary, much like a neighbor who accuses you of giving her goiters with your brain. Enhance reality with this GrouponLive deal to see Scrooge: The Musical at Seattle Musical Theatre at Magnuson Park. For $20, you get one ticket for seating in rows L–R of the center section, or rows L–U of the left and right sections (up to a $43.50 value, including all fees). The production runs from November 16 through December 9, with shows Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Doors open 1 hour before showtime.

Charles Dickens's classic holiday page-turner, A Christmas Carol, leaps from its binding onto the stage in Scrooge: The Musical, a melodic revamp of the Yuletide classic. Since 1843, the story of Ebenezer Scrooge's struggle with clinical skinflint has inflated generations with the spirit of giving and respect for moralizing poltergeists. A cast of locally harvested thespians and broad-ranged crooners bring the iconic characters to life, including favorites such as Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmas Time-Space Continua. Leslie Bricusse adapted the script in 1992 from his own celebrated film, with the festive tunes “Father Christmas” and “December the Twenty-Fifth” showcasing the songwriting prowess that earned him a Grammy and two Academy Awards throughout his career.

The Groupon Guide to: New Plays

Anyone who thinks live theater is a dying art hasn't experienced the magic of an actor creating an explosion on stage using only sounds from his mouth or changing into a different character using only a switch of the hat. Take a look at some of the fascinating contemporary plays coming to a theater near you:

The Sanders Family Chronicles: When the family dog dies, the Sanders family's 14 adult children must return to the small Southern town where they grew up. Getting these 14 very different people to agree on one dog's burial plot won't be easy, and you can bet secrets are going to be revealed.

Oh! To Move! or The Weather in Cincinnati Has Never Been So Clear: Don't ever say an old lady can't dance. Ever since her husband passed, Eva Marie can't stop boppin' to the beat. This 67-year-old has a new lease on life, and she's swingin' her stuff at every pub in town when she meets a stranger who loves dancing just as much as she does. This feel-good hit has critics saying "Go, Eva Marie, go!"

The Last Soldier of Queens: When a major corporation comes in and wants to turn all of Queens into a Dormart, a regular working-class man named Reginald Guy stands his ground. As Dormart razes the town to prepare for construction, Reg Guy watches his hometown transform into a postapocalyptic wasteland. It all comes to a head in a climatic showdown between Reg and his nemesis, The Bulldozer Monster.

When will you see the new play "The Last Soldier of Queens"?
