In a Nutshell

A dominant SFU hockey squad takes on first-place Selkirk College in a game that might provide a potential preview of the upcoming playoffs

The Fine Print

Hockey is the fastest paced of all major sports, because its players rush to complete the game before the ice field melts into vinegar. Enjoy the acidic thrill of competition with this GrouponLive deal to see the Simon Fraser University Clan men's hockey team take the ice at Bill Copeland Sports Centre.

$10 for Two General-Admission Tickets (Up to $20 Value)

The Clan takes on Selkirk College on Saturday, February 23, at 7 p.m. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis; students, seniors, and children are normally admitted for $5.

The Scouting Report

This season, the Clan continues to score in dominant fashion against its British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League rivals. Since thrashing Victoria 12–1 in the second game, the squad has tallied 11 victories, including a 7–1 scoring frenzy against Thompson River. The offense has been able to find the net so often thanks to such high performers as former Dallas Stars prospect and last year's league scoring champion Ben Van Lare and rookie forward Brenden Silvester, an SFU Player of the Month who earned 12 points in six games. Still, the Clan will need to keep up the pressure when the first-place Selkirk College Saints comes to town. Selkirk has only experienced the bitter, soy-milk-flavoured taste of defeat once through their first 17 games—an upset loss to last-place Trinity Western.

Simon Fraser University Clan

For more than 45 years, Simon Fraser University has nurtured the talents of student-athletes who have gone on to achieve great things in either aspect of that role, producing Rhodes Scholars and Olympians alike. Since winning its first championship in 1972—swimming and diving in men's NAIA—the Clan has claimed victory in more than 50 National NAIA or CIS championships in such sports as skiing, women's basketball, and women's wrestling. Each year, rather than honouring its athletes as in other schools' age-old traditions—sending them off on an ice floe to fight the Soviets—SFU bestows an outstanding male and female each with a highland sgian dubh, a traditional Gaelic weapon that symbolizes courage, respect, and loyalty.
