In a Nutshell

Dance company celebrates its 10th anniversary with an evening of Shakespearean interpretations, featuring José Limón’s The Moor’s Pavane

The Fine Print

Dancers spend an unusual amount of time on their toes, much like the coworker who creeps up behind your chair every day just to watch you for a while. Gaze at grace with this GrouponLive deal to see Shakespeare Dances performed by sjDANCEco at the California Theatre. For $40, you get two tickets for general admission (up to an $86.96 value, including all fees). Performances begin at 8 p.m.; doors open at 7 p.m. Choose between the following dates:

  • Friday, October 5
  • Saturday, October 6

In its 10th-anniversary season, sjDANCEco enters with a movement-based exploration of the Bard’s works, centered around choreographer José Limón’s most famous piece, The Moor’s Pavane. Based on Shakespeare’s Othello, the production intimately stages the tale with four dancers portraying the two couples at the center of the drama: Othello and Desdemona, and Iago and Emilia. The male leads often break off from the pack, the pair mirroring each other in balancing poses and flourishes as Iago whispers venomous falsehoods into Othello’s ear. Desdemona treats her fatal handkerchief as though it’s another character, keeping it close to her hand until Emilia snatches it for her husband’s twisted plans.

The evening also showcases new pieces from the company’s artistic directors and choreographers, each paying some homage to Shakespeare’s plays or lesser-known radio jingles. Conductor Barbara Day Turner shows off her timekeeping talents as she leads the San José Chamber Orchestra in stirring musical accompaniment.
