The Program

Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 might be a tribute of sorts to his predecessor Mozart, but this concert champions the future of classical music in Orange County. Winners of the South Coast Symphony's Young STARS competition take the stage with internationally renowned pianist Andreas Klein for this performance. The orchestra carries the concerto's introduction, so rich and fully realized it is almost surprising when the piano adds its notes after the initial theme winds down. As the first movement progresses, the soloist and the orchestra entwine their phrasings like an unusually tuneful vaudevillian act, evoking a similarly complicated structure in Mozart's Concerto in C minor. The piano takes the lead in the quieter second movement, punctuated by effervescent plucking in the string section. Finally, the jaunty third movement climaxes with a dazzling reconstruction of every melody that has come before.

South Coast Symphony

The South Coast Symphony bills itself as "the unstuffy symphony." Which isn't to say that its pro musicians have any disrespect for the classical tradition—any given season likely will be rich with mammoth orchestral works and famous operas. But the group has broad tastes, and accordingly partners with a wide range of musicians to put on evenings of Broadway show tunes, renditions of classic-rock albums, and film-score performances. Many of the concerts are designed to be welcoming to a wide audience, including kids or adults who have never listened to anything besides CDs of funny sound effects.
