The Program

Under the steady baton of music director and conductor George Hanson, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra explores the works of beloved German composers. The concert begins with the sunrise strains of the Siegfried Idyll, which blossoms from a peaceful introduction into a joyous swell of woodwinds mimicking birdsong. The soprano Amber Wagner joins the orchestra as the vocal soloist for Wesendonck Lieder, a five-piece song cycle based on the poems of Mathilde Wesendonck that allows Wagner to demonstrate her octave-scaling voice.

After interpreting two of the only nonopera Richard Wagner pieces performed regularly today, the orchestra returns from intermission to peek in on a less-explored side of Beethoven: his time as an opera composer. The Leonore Overture no. 3 from Fidelio opens with brooding strings cut through by lighter clarinet harmonies. A single flute and a chorus of strings pick up the brightening mood with a call-and-response pattern of flighty triplets. Amber Wagner joins the ensemble once again for Abscheulicher! (which translates to “abominable” and is directed at the opera’s villain), closing out the night with an aria that steps delicately along the line between thundering drama and wistful balladry.
