Troupe of more than 60 trained gladiators and horses reenacts Spartacus’s stint in the Roman Coliseum with sword fights and chariot duels

The Fine Print

Reenactments of famous battles make history exciting, much like a trance remix of the Gettysburg Address. See some heart-pounding history with this GrouponLive deal to Spartacus and the Roman Legion presented by ChronoMedia Histor’Event at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Griffith Park. For $17, you get general admission for one (up to a $37.22 value). Shows are at 3 p.m., with doors opening at 2:30 p.m. Choose between the following dates:

  • Saturday, December 15
  • Sunday, December 16

Spartacus’s immortal legacy as a former gladiator and freedom-seeker has long inspired history buffs, including Mickael Durand and Aurélien Nougé, founders of ChronoMedia Histor’Event. In their latest spectacle, a troupe of more than 60 trained and armed gladiators tamps down the dirt of the modern coliseum on foot, horseback, and in anachronistic American Gladiator balls to retell the legendary hero’s journey. Over the course of the 90-minute show, swords will clash, chariots will play chicken, and the emperor will decide the fate of the fighters. A meet and greet follows each show, giving attendees the chance to take pictures with the performers and repeatedly ask the leading man if he’s Kirk Douglas.

The Groupon Guide to: Harebrained Schemes

These days it seems like everyone has some kind of harebrained get-rich-quick scheme. Use this handy guide to sort out whether a scheme is destined for failure or straight for the bank:

Scheme: Your neighbor Robert wants you to open a flower shop with him.
Verdict: Harebrained. Robert inherited the flower shop from his father, but in order to keep the shop’s best customer, Mrs. Winifred Downing, you’ll have to pretend that Robert’s father is still alive and court Mrs. Downing in his guise.

Scheme: Your boyfriend, Calvin, wants to get married.
Verdict: Harebrained. Calvin will use the marriage as a contract to bind you together both financially and spiritually. Once you’ve signed the paperwork, Calvin can move into your house and even use your toilet.

Scheme: Your older cousin, Harrison, wants to build an airplane in the front yard and charge local children to take rides in it.
Verdict: Legitimate. This is a business opportunity you won’t want to pass up, just to see every other family in the neighborhood raking in money with their front-yard aeronautics companies. Sign over all of your bank accounts and government bonds to Harrison as soon as possible.

Look at those children having fun in that raft on the roof!
