The Scouting Report

Despite a healthy record above .500, last year's World Series champs can't just sit back and admire their rings. Throughout September, the team has found itself staving off competitors at the top of the NL Wild Card standings–a battle that looks like it might last until the regular season ends on October 3. Oddly enough, the Cardinals were involved in a similar late-season tug-of-war last year, just before a historic run jettisoned them into the playoffs and a place in history.

Hoping for a similar finish this time around, fans rally around a stable of familiar faces on the field. Like the only high-school junior with his own car, David Freese has brought many of his friends home, racking up 78 RBIs in 135 games. Rejuvenated right fielder Carlos Beltran augments Freese's offensive effort, lighting up the board with 29 home runs in 139 games.
