The Scouting Report

In their Pac-12 conference opener on September 21, the Cardinal showed glimpses of just how dominant they can be. Squaring off against the 23rd-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils, Stanford bullied its way to a 29-0 lead before halftime. ASU posted a fourth-quarter charge, but the Cardinal still emerged victorious, 42-28. On October 5, against Pac-12 rival Washington, the team continues its march toward a second straight conference championship and hopefully the National Title game. Prior to last season, the Cardinal hadn’t won a Pac-12 championship since 1999—a year when every team got a trophy since the world was about to end anyway.

As the Cardinal and Huskies line up before the kickoff, Stanford Stadium becomes a frenzied, bright-red mosaic of 50,000 cheering fans as twin video boards glimmer with highlights and ESPN cameras rove the sidelines broadcasting the game to a national audience.

Stanford Cardinal Athletics

Having amassed 103 NCAA Championships in its proud history, one thing is clear about Stanford athletic programs: they don’t need an official mascot. Though the Stanford tree sometimes makes an appearance, the Stanford Cardinal actually refers to the school’s cardinal-red color scheme. Either way, the school has never suffered for lacking a spirit animal; it holds the second-most NCAA Championships of any school in the country, and its athletic program has won 18 straight Director’s Cups—an award bestowed upon the school that wins the most total championships across all sports. The athletic powerhouse’s Hall of Fame reads like a veritable who’s-who of influential athletes, from recent inductee and Olympic gold medal swimmer Misty Hyman to tennis icon John McEnroe, who perfected his brash brand of tennis and mild-mannered ping-pong style on the Stanford campus.
