The Scouting Report

As conference play heats up and the big tournament nears, the Stanford Cardinal Men's basketball team has begun its campaign to claim a spot in the upper tier of the Pac-12. In just his fifth season, head coach Johnny Dawkins has already proved to be an invaluable leader, cultivating multiple NBA draft picks. Sophomore guard and second-leading scorer Chasson Randle leads a high-octane Cardinal offense alongside junior forward and top scorer Dwight Powell, whose ability to snag rebounds, block shots, and spin a textbook on his finger earned him a spot on the Pac-10’s All-Freshman Team two seasons ago and a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention nod last year.

Currently occupying a spot in the nation's top 10 and riding a streak of five consecutive Final Four appearances, the Stanford Cardinal Women's team is also facing down a conference slate that they hope ends the same way it has for the last 12 seasons - with a regular-season championship. Setsuko Ishiyama Director of Women's Basketball and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Tara VanDerveer relies heavily on the experience of a pair of veteran forwards - senior Joslyn Tinkle and junior Chiney Ogwumike. In addition to chasing championships, Ogwumike is also in pursuit of personal glory, hoping to improve upon a 2012 campaign that saw her named to the WBCA Division I Coaches' All-America Team.

The Groupon Guide to: Talking to Dogs

The mutual affinity between humans and dogs is often hampered by a natural language barrier. Fortunately, if spoken in an affectionate tone formerly reserved for babies, dogs are able to fully understand any of the following phrases:

  • “Whoosa good boy?”
  • “Go forra walk?”
  • “Thank you for that bird, but I don’t want that bird! Wanna go bury that bird? Who’s gonna go bury that bird?”
  • “Chew up this evidence of mail fraud! That’s my girl.”
  • “Wait a minute, who’s secretly been a dog-shaped pile of laundry this whole time? That’s right—YOU have!”

Can dogs really understand these phrases?
