Musicals have always brought impossible dreams to life on stage, from cats that can talk to humans who can sing in public without feeling weird. Escape from reality with this GrouponLive deal to see Sing-a-Long Grease at the State Theatre. For $12, you get one ticket for mid-orchestra, front- or mid-balcony, or gallery seating on Sunday, February 24, at 3 p.m. (up to a $25 value). Doors open at 1:30 p.m.

In the world of Grease, drag races rip through the night, gals can apply lipstick in the sheen of their guys' slicked-back hair, and synchronized song-and-dance numbers erupt from leather-jacketed youth. Simply projecting the film on the State Theatre’s 46-foot screen would be enough to transport viewers back to the '50s, but this one-night event totally immerses the audience by casting them in the musical. The evening opens with a live show, where the host prepares the crowd’s pipes with vocal warm-ups and revs up their wrists with hand-jive lessons. Additionally, every attendee receives a goody bag to use throughout the movie. Each sack is filled with assorted props to liven up the already lively songs as attendees sing along, from the woozy romance of “Summer Nights” to the piano boogie of “Greased Lightning.” Winners of the costume contest receive prizes already preserved in pomade, and a fleet of classic cars will be on display before the show, the looks of envy in onlookers’ eyes drowned out by the flash of the theater’s marquee.

Please note that there is no elevator at State Theatre and that the balcony level is only accessible by stairs.

State Theatre

The State Theatre was saved, as its website states, from "the ravages of time." Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue's signature dome.
