Empress of Soul Gladys Knight’s reign dates back to at least to 1960, when she was just 16 and she and The Pips released their debut album. Some 38 records later, she has racked up eight Grammy awards, earned a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and cemented a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Last spring, she stayed busy twirling and tangoing as a cast member on Dancing with the Stars and working with producer Randy Jackson on her latest album, which includes her single “I (Who Have Nothing).”
In concerts, Knight’s voice still flutters to soaring heights in “Every Beat of My Heart,” and the energetic chorus of mega-hit “Midnight Train to Georgia” captures with the sentiment of anyone who’s ever yearned for the comforting smell of the Atlanta Coca-Cola plant. Her shows keep the focus on her formidable pipes and easygoing “between-song chatter that’s almost as entertaining as the music,” according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.<p>

The State Theatre was saved, as its website states, from "the ravages of time." Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue's signature dome.
