The Fine Print

Classical music boosts listeners' brain functions and energy levels, which is why every child should ingest a well-rounded harpsichord each morning. Treat your noggin to a mellifluous meal with this GrouponLive deal to see Salute to Vienna at State Theatre in New Brunswick on Monday, December 31, at 6 p.m. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Choose between the following seating options:

  • For $35, you get one ticket for mid-balcony seating (up to a $70 value, including all fees).
  • For $45, you get one ticket for mid-orchestra or front-balcony seating (up to a $90 value, including all fees).

There is no elevator to balcony seating, so patrons must walk up the stairs.

A longstanding seasonal highlight at State Theatre, Salute to Vienna saves audiences the airfare to Austria with an evening patterned after Vienna's world-renowned Neujahrskonzert—a glittery New Year's Day cavalcade of classical music, arias, and dances. Stockholm-based conductor Mika Eichenholz leads the Strauss Symphony of America into a selection of its namesake composer's waltzes before bringing down the house with The Blue Danube, the instantly recognizable, grandly swaying tune that has been used in everything from cartoon comedy to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Accompanying these perennials is a lively lineup of polkas and excerpts from classic Austrian operettas including Die Fledermaus and The Merry Widow.

More than 75 musicians, European singers—including Budapest soprano Mónika Fischl and Vienna's own tenor Michael Heim—and dancers from Ukraine's Kiev-Aniko Ballet illuminate the stage with finely tuned harmonies and visual spectacle. If it sticks around the neighborhood until midnight, the audience will be rewarded with a fireworks display in Monument Square.

State Theatre

The State Theatre was saved, as its website states, from "the ravages of time." Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s when disco balls replaced light fixtures. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue's signature dome.

The Groupon Guide to: Harebrained Schemes

These days it seems like everyone has some kind of harebrained get-rich-quick scheme. Use this handy guide to sort out whether a scheme is destined for failure or straight for the bank:

Scheme: Your neighbor Robert wants you to open a flower shop with him.
Verdict: Harebrained. Robert inherited the flower shop from his father, but in order to keep the shop’s best customer, Mrs. Winifred Downing, you’ll have to pretend that Robert’s father is still alive and court Mrs. Downing in his guise.

Scheme: Your boyfriend, Calvin, wants to get married.
Verdict: Harebrained. Calvin will use the marriage as a contract to bind you together both financially and spiritually. Once you’ve signed the paperwork, Calvin can move into your house and even use your toilet.

Scheme: Your older cousin, Harrison, wants to build an airplane in the front yard and charge local children to take rides in it.
Verdict: Legitimate. This is a business opportunity you won’t want to pass up, just to see every other family in the neighborhood raking in money with their front-yard aeronautics companies. Sign over all of your bank accounts and government bonds to Harrison as soon as possible.

Look at those children having fun in that raft on the roof!
