In a Nutshell

Guitar legend fingerpicks his six-stringed Ibanez after a finalist from The Voice invigorates crowds with her soulful singing and charisma

The Fine Print

Rock 'n' roll is one of two jobs in which you are encouraged to set your tools on fire when you're done with them—the other, of course, is dentistry. Hear hot licks with this GrouponLive deal to see Steve Vai at the House of Blues Chicago. For $50, you get a concert package for two on Friday, September 28, at 8:30 p.m. (a $144.20 total value). Doors open at 7:30 p.m. The package includes the following:

  • General admission for two (up to a $52.10 value each, including fees).
  • Access to the Foundation Room (a $40 value)

Wearing his trademark rectangular sunglasses with colored lenses, Steve Vai stands at center stage, six-stringed Ibanez in hand. He fingerpicks his ax, then taps on a pedal that transforms its natural sound into a spacey wail akin to a theremin. Light bends during the solo. His emotional intensity waxes and wanes.

In concert, Vai appeases serious fans with more than 20 gems from his eight-album catalog, whether it be the synth-heavy “Whispering a Prayer” or “Velorum,” a metal ballad packed with hypnotic harmonies from his latest release, The Story of Light. In addition to his standard set, he often puts an audience member on the spot, asking them to write an original tune and recite the alphabet backwards during a segment called Build Me a Song. Songstress Beverly McClellan, best known for her throaty rendition of Janis Joplin's “Piece of My Heart” on NBC's The Voice, preps audiences for the guitar acrobatics with an opening set. She reappears later in the night to sing lead on Vai’s funk-tinged stomper “John the Revelator.”

Throughout and after the performance, guests enjoy the amenities of the exclusive Foundation Room, which houses a dining room decorated with 19th-century French mahogany, Oriental carpets, and memorabilia from the Anheuser-Busch mansion. Groupon holders can also order from the Foundation Room's menu of contemporary American food infused with Pacific Rim touches (food not included with this Groupon).

House of Blues Chicago

Modeled on Prague’s Estates Theatre with its opera boxes and high-domed ceiling, House of Blues Chicago opened in 1996. Keeping with the franchise’s tradition, the stage hides a metal box filled with Mississippi mud, and every artist must recall at least one lover who did them wrong before they are allowed on stage. The Chicago location distinguishes itself with a weekly gospel brunch held every Sunday morning, where big-voiced hallelujahs complement custom omelets, made-to-order waffles, and a chef’s choice carving station.

The Groupon Guide to: Collectible Trinkets

No mantel, shadow box, or garbage bag in the attic is complete without a display of valuable collectibles, appreciating exponentially with each passing year. You may already be a millionaire if you collect any of the following:

Beanie Babies: These limp, boneless animals are a college tuition waiting to happen.
Most Valuable Beanie Baby: Lillehammer, the ’94 Winter Games herring

PEZ Dispensers: It turns out these valuable treat scepters are more than just miniature tracheotomy patients that dispense a candy tasting of equal parts chalk and soap.
Most Valuable PEZ Dispenser: Rare Darth Vader with Kermit the Frog’s eyes affixed to the top of his helmet as a result of factory error

Hot Wheels: Small? Sure. Cars? Definitely. These small cars look just like regular cars—but smaller.
Most Valuable Hot Wheels Car: The 1981 Pioneer Ferrari 308 GTB—shrunk from a full-size car using experimental technology—that contains a now-tiny Vice President Mondale who was just sitting behind the wheel for a second to take a photo

What valuable toys are currently rotting in your attic?
