“Strangers, Babies”

When we first meet May, she’s doting over a baby bird caught on her balcony while her husband explains there’s nothing she can do to save it. But there’s a dark undercurrent to May’s nurturing urges, which the audience slowly discovers as they sit in on five conversations between the protagonist and several different men in her life. Robert Hurwitt of the San Francisco Chronicle praised the sense of mystery in Linda McLean’s melancholy script, describing how “[Danielle Levin’s] May seems to grow deeper and contain more facets—troublesome, familiar, unknowable—even as she remains our one constant point of contact.”

Shotgun Players

When founding Artistic Director Patrick Dooley started Shotgun Players more than 20 years ago, he had nothing more than a cast of 10 actors, a bucket of black paint, and a warehouse full of comedy and tragedy masks. The company has since grown—finding a permanent home and artistic staff—but their mission remains the same: to create bold, relevant, and affordable theatre. Many of their plays are world premieres, as the Players commission at least one new script per season. Several of these have gone on to win or be nominated for the Will Glickman Award, including Dog Act, Beowulf: A Thousand Years of Baggage, Phaedra, and God’s Plot.
