Taikoza Live 2013 + Ichiro Jishoya

Taikoza performs at the Concert for Japan in 2011

Eric Hubler of the Washington Post marveled that "something strange and wonderful [was] coming... There was thunder and there was lightning and there was the sea crashing against a cliff." He wasn't speaking of an incoming storm, but a different elemental force entirely: the taiko drum troupe Taikoza. Pounding a theater-shaking rumble on drums that weigh more than some grizzly bears, the members of Taikoza draw on an ancient tradition originally developed to communicate across vast distances. The intrepid musicians are joined by special guest Ichiro Jishoya, a taiko master known for playing 10 of the massive drums at once.

The ensemble itself is as uniquely storied as the classic and contemporary music it plays. Formed in New York City in 1995, Taikoza is an unusually global company—a traditional Japanese ensemble made up of multinationals. Swiss-born founder Marco Lienhard was trained by the masters, learning his technique as a member of famed group Ondekoza. When Lienhard started his own ensemble, he united a talented crew of Japanese natives, Americans with Japanese roots, and drums pleased to be taking center stage. Taikoza has won acclaim for stirring performances, staged everywhere from Carnegie Hall to Miyajima Temple in Hiroshima, and the group has visited countries around the world in the course of its musical journey.
