Tango de Buenos Aires
It's more than a rose between the teeth and a swift stride across the floor. The traditional Argentinian tango is like a storybook love affair, written by rhythm and enacted with passion and fluidity. In Tango de Buenos Aires, five pairs of duos romance audiences with feats of flowing footwork and sheer athleticism, exploring steps drawn from folklore and tango nuevo. Headlining, legendary master Nelson Avila and his partner Madalyn put their stamp and stomp on the coastal dance styles, sharing the stage with world-class master pairs such as Oscar Mandagaran with Georgina Vargas and Guillermo Merlo with Fernanda Ghi. Acclaimed accordionist Emmanuel Trifilio and Argentine folklore trio Cantoral Tr3s keep the dancers in motion, using their enticing melodies and an electrified stage.
Caminito Amigo could make any DC resident believe she's somehow wandered onto Argentinian soil. Specializing in tango, the troupe engulfs audiences and students alike in "sentimiento"—the belief that when one starts to dance, their first step is an actual feeling, not just a physical movement. In shows and workshops, they help beginners and advanced dancers tap into this sentimiento in the elegant salon style of Milonguero—characterized by close embrace.
