The Fine Print

Basketball has changed dramatically since its inception, when the hoop was a peach basket, the balls were peaches, and the players were peach-farm employees just doing their jobs. In addition to taking in the on-court action against the Rams, ticketholders for the Rhode Island game can celebrate the birthday of mascot Hooter the Owl with a concourse full of games and appearances by other local mascots presented by the Philadelphia Federal Credit Union. The first 1,500 fans ages 14 and younger receive a Temple Owls cap. Doors open 90 minutes before tipoff.

The Scouting Report

With a 19–8 overall record that includes a signature victory over the Syracuse Orange, the Temple Owls hope to secure an invitation to the Big Dance with a strong performance in the final two home games of the season. The opposing Rhode Island Rams will enter the frenzied Liacouras Center on a mission to improve on a season in which they have only won three of the first 13 conference games. Win or lose, Owls players will stick around after the game for a picture-taking and autograph session in honor of mascot Hooter the Owl's birthday.

For the Owls’ final Atlantic 10 Conference home game before their departure for the bright lights of the BIG EAST, it's a white-out: the team will team hit the court in front of a white-clad crowd looking for a victory over Shaka Smart and the vaunted VCU Rams—currently in second place in the Atlantic 10. Their quest for victory will be aided by spirits of the past, manifested during a halftime ceremony honoring Temple's 1987-88 Atlantic 10 championship squad. Such a win would bolster Temple’s postseason resumé better than a forged letter of recommendation by Dr. James Naismith.

In both matchups, Temple senior guard and leading scorer Khalif Wyatt will be looking to build on an impressive set of virtuoso performances. In February, Wyatt scored 24 points in an 83–82 victory over UMass. He also managed to put up 25 points in an 89–88 victory over Charlotte in addition to nailing the game-winning three-pointer in a 72–71 barn-burner at Dayton—a moment that more or less established Wyatt as the Owl’s go-to, down-the-stretch gunner.

Temple University Athletics

Upon its founding in 1880, Temple University selected the Owl as its school mascot and symbol, a reference to the fact that the Philadelphia institution began as a night school for those who had to tend to other responsibilities during the day. The Owl became a rallying cry for Temple's ambitious students, and under the banner of the nocturnal predator, Temple University became one of America’s first schools to offer extracurricular activities for students. As of 2012, the Temple Owls were the NCAA’s sixth-winningest men’s basketball program of all time, a program of distinction that dates back to 1938, when the Owls won the first-ever national championship in college basketball history. With a more illustrious history than a 19th century coloring book, the school now boasts immaculate, modern facilities to support of the range of men's and women's athletic programs.
