New production company stages award-winning musical comedy about a group of overachieving students fixated on winning their spelling bee

Musicals have always brought impossible dreams to life on stage, from cats that can talk to humans who can sing in public without feeling weird. Escape from reality with this deal.

The Deal

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

The clever musical centers on six adolescent overachievers, each mired in their own unique form of pubescent angst as they embark on a comic quest to win a spelling competition. The play’s hilarity endures while the affable outcasts battle batty judges, frustrating pronouncers, and unhelpful usage-in-a-sentence examples. During each performance, four volunteer audience members hop on stage to compete in the bee along with the characters, creating the most fun interaction between actor and audience since Laurence Olivier’s infamous stage dives.

About Easy Street Productions

Frustrated with the musical theater selection in Toronto's playhouses, opera singer Lori Ossip decided to found her own company. She even picked a moniker that would proclaim her love for classic American showtunes: Easy Street Productions, named after the song from Annie!. Now at work on their first season, the outfit is dedicated to producing musicals in intimate venues, bringing audiences closer to the stage and farther away from the ominous sparrows that have been following them all week.
