In a Nutshell

Swing band, tributes to Buddy Holly and the Broadway musical Jersey Boys, and a Sinatra-loving vocal trio

The Fine Print

Without music, concerts wouldn't exist and funk would just be the smell emanating from an old sock filled with corn. Lend an ear to this GrouponLive deal to see a concert at the Borland Center. For all shows, doors open one hour before showtime. Choose from the following options:

Johnny Cool and the Mobster Swing Band transport their throwback sound to listeners’ ears, reaching all the way back to the 1930s for material from Cab Calloway and Louis Jordan. Hits from crooners such as Etta James, Frank Sinatra, and Bobby Darin incite concertgoers to dance the jitterbug, lindy hop, and auditorium-chair shimmy.

Early February ushers in Buddy Holly doppelganger Billy McGuigan. The consummate performer, who says he’s earned the accolades of Holly’s former lead guitarist Tommy Allsup and songwriter Sonny West, embodies the bespectacled rock ‘n’ roller’s energy and off-kilter optimism in hits such as “Peggy Sue,” “That’ll Be the Day,” and, of course, “Rave On!” A full backing band, complete with saxophone, bops behind him on a set that evokes the eye-popping world of 1950s teen dance shows.

  • For $50, you get two general-admission tickets to see the Atlantic City Boys on Friday, February 22, at 7 p.m. (up to a $102.75 value, including all fees).

The Atlantic City Boys take over the stage with their tribute to the Broadway hit Jersey Boys. The quartet, backed by a live band and decked out in matching red suits, uncannily match the harmonies of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons on tracks such as “Walk Like a Man,” “Sherry Baby,” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” During their interactive show, they also reinterpret songs from other 1960s hitmakers such as The Beach Boys and The Drifters without skipping a beat of their synchronized choreography or letting their soaring falsettos touch the ground.

  • For $32, you get two general-admission tickets to see Three Men & a Baby Grand on Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. (up to a $66.75 value, including all fees).

Brian Lane Green, Lee Lessack, and John Boswell blend their crisp vocals with Johnny Rodgers’ twinkling piano playing and booming tenor as they pay homage to Frank Sinatra, Tom Selleck, and the swinging sounds of classic Broadway. Audiences might hear “Luck Be a Lady,” “Embraceable You,” “The Girl from Ipanema,” and “Moon River.”

Borland Center

Named in honor of golf-course designer Bruce Borland, who died in a plane accident in 1999, the Borland Center swings open its doors to the community by focusing on family values. Concerts, plays, and recitals are just a few of the events that coax guests into the venue's 10,000 square feet of space, which harbors a 500-seat theater and a multipurpose ballroom that doubles as an indoor practice field for local cribbage teams on rainy days.
