The Show

Asked about his newest work during an interview with the American Dance Festival’s video blog, Ronald K. Brown reflected on the inception of On Earth Together, based on the music of Stevie Wonder. “There's something about the compassion that Stevie Wonder speaks about in his music, in terms of individuals and personal relationships, but also in relationship to the world. So that was kind of the hook that I needed to give birth to this piece.” Graceful, expressive, and not quite rooted in any one tradition, Evidence makes a wordless plea for global understanding to such Wonder songs as “All I Do” and “Blame It on the Sun.” This message is commensurate with the mission of the dance company as a whole: to provide sensory connections to the human experience in the African diaspora and history itself.

Accolades

In 2008, Mark Russell of New York's Under the Radar festival told the New York Times of dancemaster Ronald K. Brown. “He's one of the more important choreographers we've got in the US,” he said, adding, “The time is coming when we'll regard Ron Brown as the master he is.” Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s artistic director, Judith Jamison, agreed: “When I see him move, I can sense the wonderful transitions that come with what Alvin would call a 'blood memory' onto the American soul and making it something about being an African-American and an American.” Brown has also been awarded fellowships with the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Carolina Theatre

One of the few original theaters in Durham to remain in operation, the Carolina Theatre has endured more than 85 years of history in its quest to entertain. The venue's main room, Fletcher Hall, rose in popularity during World War II, when soldiers from Camp Butner arrived by bus to watch films on its colossal screen. In the last three decades, ongoing renovations have restored the venue to its original glory while propelling it into contemporary times with the addition of modern accoutrements, including two upstairs movie screens, stage-level dressing rooms, and landing pads on the roof for skateboard hovercrafts.
