In a Nutshell

Tony Award–winning musical based on the classic Alice Walker novel unfolds in the Cultural Center's sweeping environs

The Fine Print

Theater challenges audiences by blending the real and the imaginary, much like a neighbor who accuses you of giving her goiters with your brain. Enhance reality with this GrouponLive deal to see The Color Purple, presented by J Ruffin Entertainment at the Harold Washington Cultural Center. Choose from the following options:

  • For $40, you get two balcony tickets on Friday, July 27, at 7 p.m. (an $80 value).
  • For $60, you get two floor tickets and a VIP preshow cast meet and greet (a $120 value). Choose between the following dates:
    • Saturday, July 28. The meet and greet starts at 5 p.m., and the curtain opens at 7 p.m.
    • Sunday, July 29. The meet and greet starts at 3 p.m., and the curtain opens at 5 p.m.

Having won 11 Tony Awards in its Broadway run in 2006, The Color Purple comes to life in a production mounted by John Ruffin, returning to themes of love and faith he's explored in his own plays. Based on Alice Walker's powerful novel of the life of black women in the American South during the first half of the 20th century, the performance blends blues, gospel, and jazz as it delves into the life of Celie, the resilient heroine at the center of the story. Celie perseveres through abuse and the loss of her sister and her children as she continues to fiercely love those who are good to her.

Songs such as "Somebody Gonna Love You" and "A Tree Named Sofia" reverberate between the Harold Washington Cultural Center's walls, paneled with luminous geometric shapes. The lobby forms a lofty space for postshow mingling, with an iron staircase unspooling from the balcony like the tongue of an enormous but elegant dragon and a huge arched window casting a twilight glow across marble floors.

Harold Washington Cultural Center

Named in honor of Chicago’s first African-American mayor, the Harold Washington Cultural Center hosts theatrical and musical events that echo the center’s mission of African-American cultural preservation. In addition to its entertainment, the center performs community outreach each year to serve more than 45,000 youth through arts programs, teen summits, and special events.
