The Program

Good cheer, innocent charm, and eminently catchy melodies reign at this concert, starting with the Sleeping Beauty–inspired opening strains of Ravel's Mother Goose Suite. Next, guest harpist Kristi Shade shines in Joaquin Rodrigo's iconic Concierto de Aranjuez for harp and orchestra, a piece that drew inspiration from the scent of magnolias, the sound of rushing fountains, and the social networking of bluebirds at the Royal Palace of Aranjuez. In a delicate interplay between Shade's swift fingers and the brass and woodwind sections, Concierto de Aranjuez brings to mind a sunny afternoon among the flowers. Mendelssohn’s Symphony no. 4 (also called The Italian) concludes the concert, ushering out the audience with its brisk and chipper denouement.

Kristi Shade

New York native Kristi Shade began playing harp at age 2, and later earned her bachelor of music and master of music degrees at the University of Miami and Manhattan School of Music, respectively. Since then, she’s fortified her award-studded resumé with classical recordings, performances in Broadway productions, and time sharing the stage with pop stars The All-American Rejects, Florence and The Machine, The Killers, and comedian Will Ferrell. Shade has used her talents to entertain royalty and presidents and has traveled to perform with numerous symphonies around the country. She was also the principal harpist of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas before its disbandment.

The Miami Symphony Orchestra

Since 1989, The Miami Symphony Orchestra has mimicked Miami’s cultural diversity with concerts and events that act as a melting pot of musical influences. Music director Eduardo Marturet, a Venezuelan composer and conductor, helms many of the concerts, encouraging the musicians to unleash their inner Beethovens or Bachs—former members of the ’80s hair-metal band Skid Row.
