The Plot

The Most Happy Fella, based on the Sidney Howard novel They Knew What They Wanted, tells the turbulent love story of Rosabella, a young and harried waitress, and Tony, an aging Italian fruit farmer whose paunch and ineloquence rivals his good-heartedness. Their love affair begins in anonymity when Rosabella finds a romantic note written by Tony in fractured English. Unsure of the author, but charmed, she replies and begins a months-long courtship via mail. When Rosabella later requests a picture of her unseen suitor, the shy Tony sends her a photo of a different, much more handsome gentlemen. When she later accepts his marriage proposal under false pretenses and finally meets her mystery man, it’s uncertain how long Tony will remain “the most happy fella.”

Showstoppers

A rarity among musicals, The Most Happy Fella is sung from top to bottom, with little spoken dialogue to narrate the acts. Warming, then breaking the hearts of audiences since 1956, the Tony-winning musical is driven by the lyrics and music of Frank Loesser, who is also known for his work in Guys and Dolls and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Loesser’s lush melodies stand out like Waldo in front of vertical stripes in ballads such as “My Heart is Full of You” and “Someday, Somewhere.” On a more playful note, audiences can’t help but tap their toes to the jaunty showstopper “Standing on the Corner” or the musical’s ecstatic title song.
