Accompanied by their human companions, thousands of pedigreed canine contenders flock to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center for a day of friendly, furry competition. In the first round, kicking off at 8:30 a.m., dogs of more than 150 breeds contend against their fellow representatives for a chance to move on to the next level, which is divided into seven groups. Fans might see a chipper Pomeranian put up against a squat pug in the toy division, or spot nonsporting dogs such as the lion-maned Löwchen and the curl-tailed shiba inu squaring off in a verbal debate. Finally, around 5 p.m., the seven winners in their respective categories take to the floor to vie for the highest honor of all: Best in Show.

Alongside the main event, canine aficionados can catch exhibitions of stunt dogs, diving dogs, and therapeutic companion pups. The National Dog Show is a benched show, meaning that all of the competitors wait ringside on assigned benches, where they meet fans and might, with their owner’s permission, accept a pat or two.

The Groupon Guide to: Too Good to Be True

There's an old saying: if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Look out for any of these impossible dreams; they might turn into all-too-possible nightmares:

A real-estate agent arrives on your doorstep with a "once-in-a-lifetime investment."
Nice try! This two-bit huckster wants you to spend your retirement fund on 6 acres of stink-swamp so he can move into your much nicer current house and pet your dog all day.

An old man with a beard says you are the newest applicant to a "prestigious wizard academy."
Steer clear! This old nut clearly wants money—or worse: for you to spend your precious time conversing with a lonely elderly person.

A beautiful, compassionate soul tells you they want to spend "the rest of our lives together."
Don't do it! If this person could see the secret darkness that you know is gestating inside you, they would turn to ashes at your touch. Say something hateful in return, in order to set them free.

How can you tell if someone is trying to trick you?
