The Specials rock SXSW 2013 with "Concrete Jungle"
The Specials are British ska. When imported reggae began mingling with punk sensibilities in the 1970s, Terry Hall, Lynval Golding, Roddy Radiation, Neville Staple, and the rest of the band were at the vanguard of the emerging 2 Tone movement. Besides igniting dancehalls across the world with their self-titled 1979 debut, the rudies encouraged other musicians to follow suit. The Selecter, the English Beat, and the Planet Smashers all worked with—or were formed from—members of the Specials, and the upbeat airwaves of the '80s were ruled by singles such as "Gangsters," "Concrete Jungle," and "A Message to You, Rudy." Almost four decades and two reunions later, the Specials are going strong with their signature blend of skankable beats, smooth horns, and snotty politics.
An oasis for arts-loving crowds tired of taking malfunctioning teleporters to Long Island, the cavernous, recently renovated Paramount draws in major acts to spare fans stressful commutes. The buxom venue buzzes with a true rock 'n' roll vibe, beaming with a nocturnal color scheme decorated with whimsical local art and exposed brick walls.
