The Piano Men Starring Jim Witter
Jim Witter was only 16 when the 1970s ended, but the decade made a big impression on him. And, apparently, on his pipes. Although bent a little by the country hitmaker's slight twang, The Piano Men's parade of hits otherwise sound uncannily similar to the two musical idols the show celebrates: Billy Joel and Elton John. But imitation isn't the end goal. Certainly, audiences can sing along to full-band renditions of such hits as "Rocket Man" and "Candle in the Wind," and may even be invited onstage to join in the 5-minute "ack-ack-ack-ack" solo of "You Oughta Know." But the show also acts a celebration of '70s culture as a whole, breaking intermittently for beloved television theme songs. Meanwhile, headlines ranging from the lightweight to the world-historical flash on a projection screen between pictures of bygone icons and other nostalgic images. Having paid his dues for years in Southern Ontario clubs before beginning to rack up Canadian Country Music Awards and top-10 singles such as "Distant Drum" and "Stolen Moments," Witter conducts the proceedings with laid-back, everyguy affability. His goal for this musical time machine, he says on his website, is simply to help audiences "forget about their troubles for a while and enjoy the moment."
