In 2004, few would have guessed that Matisyahu would become the next reggae superstar. A 6’4” Hasidic Jew sporting a black suit and an unclipped beard, he shot to fame thanks to the cathartic strength of his debut, Shake off the Dust… Arise, and his penchant for stagediving. His rhymes draw on four millennia of emotion to speak of pain, sorrow, triumph, and finding joy in a higher power, as he beseeches in the soaring rap “Time of Your Song” on his Grammy-nominated sophomore album, Youth_—“I’m the arrow and you’re my bow/Shoot me forth, and I will go.” In late 2011 he surprised everyone once more by posting a picture of himself online with a freshly shorn face with the caption “No more Chassidic reggae superstar.” His 2012 release, _Spark Seeker, produced by Kool Kojak, offered a poppier, more secular sound, but inspirational jams such as “Live Like a Warrior” and “Sunshine” show that, while the beard might be gone, this spiritually grounded spitter has not lost track of his soul.

Straight out of Huntington Beach, The Dirty Heads conjure Sublime as they bring an acoustic, punk-rap-reggae hybrid that champions peace, love, and positivity. The beachy Cabin by the Sea, released in 2012, features verses from Matisyahu himself on the perpetual motion groove of “Dance All Night,” and Del the Funky Homosapien joins in on the hard-hitting “Smoke Rings,” an eco-conscious tribute to all plant life, from weeds to grass to trees to pet-eating Venus flytraps.

Reviews

Matisyahu knows how to light up a crowd! He's as elevating in a live performance as his lyrics are from his albums!

seeing The Dirty Heads in concert blew my mind. I've never seen one group have so much energy and really kill it in a show.
