Staged last year as a much-needed alternative to the Yuletide season’s surfeit of Nutcracker performances, DanceVision’s adaptation of The Snow Queen uses enchanting choreography to tell Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved winter tale. A bittersweet story of the warming power of love against the cold of hate, the production begins with youngsters Gerda and Kai living next door to each other in a tiny Scandinavian village. They start off carefree, but a prank by a demon results in shards of an evil mirror lodged firmly in Kai’s eyes. Soon, the glass splinters cause ill will in the little boy, leading him to mock Gerda's grandmother and spurn his longtime friend. Within a year, Kai is abducted by the beautiful yet wicked Snow Queen, who thrives from his newfound callousness. Gerda embarks on a quest to save her erstwhile playmate, braving a sorceress, raven, and army of ice maidens to rekindle Kai’s extinguished inner flame of kindness. Set to an original arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov and Edvard Grieg’s moody, blustering compositions, this adventure into the chilly center of winter was spearheaded by DanceVision’s founder and director Risa Kaplowitz.

DanceVision

Founded by former ballerina Risa Kaplowitz in 2005, DanceVision supplements their annual full-length presentations with educational outreach programs and all-genre dance festivals. Performers of all ages take the stage in such literary adaptations as The Secret Garden and the newly-minted holiday tradition The Snow Queen. When not on stage, the company might be found helping out with the Princeton Dance for Parkinson event, or relaxing flamingo-style with one leg up in the air.
