There’s true magic in the music of doo-wop groups. Maybe it’s the seamless harmonies. Maybe it’s the cool choreography. But something about the songs conjures images of Lover’s Lane cruises and two-straw malts. In a family-friendly showcase of flashy suits, hot steps, and sing-along classics, The Original Cornell Gunter’s Coasters, The Original Drifters, and The Platters Revue bring the nostalgia of their popular Las Vegas show to Thousand Oaks.
Although all of the original members of The Coasters have, sadly, passed on, The Original Cornell Gunter’s Coasters carry the spiritual, metaphorical, and legal torch of “The Clown Princes of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” With lead singer Charlie Duncan at the helm, the trio goes for the funny bone in humorous yet timeless hits, from “Yakety Yak” to “Charlie Brown,” a tale of a bass-voiced slacker who always asks, “Why’s everybody always pickin’ on me?” Before his departure, the last surviving member of The Drifters, Bill Pinkney, passed the keys to the doo-wop kingdom to The Original Drifters, who continue his legacy by crooning romantic chestnuts such as “Up on the Roof,” “Under the Boardwalk,” and “Perpendicular to the Sun Porch.” The Platters, who’ve been led by powerhouse vocalist Monroe Powell for the last 25 years, inspire renewed vows and full-finger hand-holding with the treasured swooners “Only You,” “Harbor Lights,” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” All three of the evening’s acts are backed by ‘60s hitmakers Cannibal and the Headhunters. Best known for “Land of 1,000 Dances,” the band bolsters each arrangement with a rhythm section of stomping beats and saxophone flair.<p>
