In a Nutshell

Politically conscious cabaret show mixes glittery decadence with songs about social consciousness and a guest performance by Julia Stiles

The Fine Print

Musical shows have always brought impossible dreams to life on stage, from cats that can talk to humans who can sing in public without feeling weird. Escape from reality with this GrouponLive deal to see The Citizens Band Return to NYC at the Abrons Art Center. For $20, you get one ticket for general admission (up to a $46.25 value, including all fees). Shows begin at 8 p.m.; doors open at 7:30 p.m. Choose from the following dates:

  • Wednesday, October 24
  • Thursday, October 25
  • Friday, October 26
  • Saturday, October 27

Combining the slinky charm of cabaret with politically conscious activism in the spirit of election season, The Citizens Band (with performers Karen Elson, Angela McCluskey, Ian Buchanan, Sarah Sophie Flicker, Rain Phoenix, and more) enlightens and entertains with glittery decadence and songs that urge people to care about the state of the country. The group's freewheeling romps—which come decked out with feathered boas, high-flying trapeze artists, and scantily clad dancers—have garnered praise from the New York Times, which lauded the act’s “darkly theatrical seduction." In their October performances, the group spins songs from their recent anti-apathy, pro-democracy album Grab a Root and Growl, which includes the jaunty ragtime satire "The Debt Rattle," the campy, vaudeville-flavored "Gasoline," and a cover of the show-tune send-up "Fare Ye Well, Bad Congressman." A slate of special guests will drop in to spice up the proceedings, with such notable interlopers as Julia Stiles, Arrested Development star Alia Shawkat, singer-musician Joe Sumner, and singer Ren Harvieu. The shows are co-sponsored by Press Here Productions and MoveOn.org, a political action committee powered by 7 million Americans.
