In a Nutshell

Band handpicked by Queen members plays almost 40 classics, including hits such as "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Somebody to Love"

The Fine Print

Cover bands look and sound just like the real thing, unlike cover audiences, who are just used mannequins holding up lighters. See the real almost-real thing with this GrouponLive deal to see Queen Extravaganza at Toyota Presents Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford. For $15, you get one G-Pass for balcony seating in sections 300–303 on Saturday, January 12, at 7:30 p.m. (up to a $35 value, including all fees). Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Because the ticket is a G-Pass, Groupon customers can use it to enter the venue directly; they will not need to redeem their Groupon at will call.

When they began auditioning for Queen Extravaganza's eventual members, Queen's guitarist, Brian May, and drummer, Roger Taylor, didn't want musicians who could simply imitate their sound. They also wanted them to carry their legacy to a new generation of fans. After 12 weeks, they found seven members that fit the bill. The ensemble of two vocalists and five musicians is co-fronted by Marc Martel, whose audition tape earned him no small amount of online attention as he uncannily replicated Freddie Mercury's soaring tenor and aggressive growl, and soulful wailer Jennifer Espinoza, who out-sang hundreds of competitors and scored her coveted role at the age of 18. The show, which runs about two hours of playing time with a 30-minute break, covers almost 40 classics, from the rock-orchestra bombast of hits such as "Bohemian Rhapsody" to more obscure early-period anthems such as "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Seven Seas of Rhye." Equal to the auditory spectacle are the show's visuals, bursting with surprises such as never-before-seen video footage and a man playing piano and singing at the same time.

From atop balcony seats, patrons of the Toyota Presents Oakdale Theatre get pristine views of the show, from the singers' impassioned stage presence to the guitarist's flashy finger work. Rich, burgundy wood and towering speaker sets encircle the wide-open stage area, framing the night’s event.

Due to security restrictions, G-Passes must be printed out and presented in person at the event. They cannot be redeemed through Groupon's mobile app.

The Dome at Oakdale

Once the site of an alfalfa field, the original Oakdale sprang up during the theater-in-the-round craze of the 1950s. Its spinning stage drew stars such as Harry Belafonte, The Who, and Led Zeppelin, who all serenaded the open-air crowds of the ‘60s while simultaneously completing their gyroscope training for Apollo shuttle missions. In 1997, the Oakdale Theatre was made over into its current, 4,600-seat arrangement, which has ushered in a new generation of entertainment stars ranging from Barney to Britney.

For those who prefer standing up and shaking it during live concerts, the adjoining concert space known as The Dome mixes the comfort of a suburban theater with the energy of a downtown club as revelers revel beneath its wooden steeple.

The Groupon Guide to: Sounding Knowledgeable about Music

Sounding knowledgeable about music is the ultimate shortcut to being perceived as cultured and cool. Memorize these key phrases to impress even the most jaded record-store clerk:

  • “You really need to hear them live."
  • “You really need to hear their earlier stuff."
  • “You really need to hear their earlier stuff, ideally live.”
  • “You really need to hear the stuff they haven’t written yet.”
  • “You really need to hear them through $900 wireless headphones, in one of those vibrating video-game chairs.”
  • “You really need to never hear them on drugs. Why would you ruin your experience by polluting your body, man?”
  • “You really need to hear their views on the new economic realities of the music industry."
  • “You really need to hear me sound impressive.”

How can you sound knowledgeable about music without actually knowing anything?
