In a Nutshell

A five-piece band replicates the greatest hits and harmonies of the rockers behind “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Wheel in the Sky”

The Fine Print

Cover bands look and sound just like the real thing, unlike cover audiences, who are just used mannequins holding up lighters. See the real almost-real thing with this GrouponLive deal to see Trial by Fire – A Tribute to Journey with modern- and classic-rock cover band Fiftywatt Freight Train at The Fillmore Charlotte. For $7, you get one G-Pass for general admission on Friday, February 8, at 9 p.m. (up to a $13 value, including all fees). Doors open at 8 p.m. Because the ticket is a G-Pass, Groupon customers can use it to enter the venue directly; they will not need to redeem their Groupon at will call.

Charlotte-based rockers Trial by Fire – A Tribute to Journey named themselves after a project some might consider a failure. In 1996, the band behind “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Lights,” and “Any Way You Want It,” came together after a decade spent pursuing solo material to release the album Trial by Fire, and they hoped to support it with a flashy new tour and a line of gourmet popcorn. But then Steve Perry injured his hip, and the tour was scrapped.

Trial by Fire – A Tribute to Journey picks up where that story ends, creating a high-energy concert experience that imagines the sights and sounds of a vintage-1996 band that never hit the road. Lead singer Ernie Shepherd—his voice a vigorous stand-in for Perry’s soaring tenor—traverses the stage confidently and welcomes audience sing-alongs as he belts out hit after hit in front of four other hard-rocking musicians. Shepherd has spent nearly a lifetime preparing for the role: on the band’s website, he says that the first record he ever bought was Escape.

Due to security restrictions, G-Passes must be printed out and presented in person at the event. They cannot be redeemed through Groupon's mobile app.

The Fillmore Charlotte

The Fillmore Charlotte models itself on the iconic San Francisco venue. Once a textile mill, the open space follows the original Fillmore’s signature decor, from red-oak hardwood floors to glimmering chandeliers to stadium-style tiers that result in pristine sightlines for attending fans.

The Groupon Guide to: Backhanded Compliments

Science has proven that it’s almost impossible to say something truly nice to another human being. Unfortunately, maintaining close friendships dictate that you, at the very least, soften your venomous barbs by disguising insults as sly backhanded compliments:

  • “You’re so funny! I wish I could take important things less seriously.”
  • “Great idea! You’re not as stupid as I thought you were for most of my life.”
  • “Nice scarf! It’s like something a handsome person would wear.”
  • “I love your musk! I can always find you in the aisles of Target.”
  • “Happy birthday! I can’t wait to have your decades of wisdom, dignified wrinkles, and rapidly depleting calcium reserves.”

Are your friends using backhanded compliments on you? Find out with today's Groupon Guide.
