In the Next Room: Or the Vibrator Play

The year is somewhere around 1880, and Dr. Givings has just created a device that treats women for hysteria—an unruly emotional condition believed to result from congestion in the womb. The device is what we now know as a vibrator, its origin story humorously and sensitively explored in Sarah Ruhl’s Tony-nominated play. While the doctor and his patients discover the benefits of this revolutionary doodad, the doctor’s wife is experiencing the turbulence of new motherhood in the next room, adding poignant layers that engage the audience with more than just titillation. The Chicago Tribune praised the play as "very clever and amusing," noting: “It will be no surprise to Ruhl fans that she smartly approaches her sexy topic here with a kind of glancing blow. There is a Victorian peep-show, but the Ruhl main attraction is full of more substantial stuff.”
