At the 13th annual Vancouver International Improv Festival, performers from across the globe and around the corner keep the Performance Works space bustling with sketch comedy and expertly winged long-form improv. A score of groups from faraway lands such as Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle invade Granville Island with ad hoc ensembles of international performers as well as groups that know each other’s acting styles and favourite fake accents by heart.
Tuesday draws shame-faced laughs from hindsight as Teen Angst Improv spins scenes out of readings from real-life old journals and poems. On Wednesday, Instant Theatre’s Zombie Apocalypse invents a half-hour zombie-escape picture. They’re paired with the loons of Seattle’s Blood Squad, who milk horror-movie clichés for dark comedy. Friday features showdowns of short sketches and games from both Philadelphia’s id-driven Amie and Kristen and the wildly popular 11-piece Toronto ensemble of the Bad Dog Theatre Company.
This year’s International Ensemble assembles an all-star cast of heavy-hitters who have spent the prior week caged together to prepare. The group first explodes with pent-up silliness on Wednesday, then closes out Sunday night along with New York’s Magnet Theatre Touring Company and, appropriately, The Sunday Service, who recently scored the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Comedy Troupe.
