The Fine Print

Going to a concert is an opportunity to be around a lot of people and maybe finally collect all those signatures you need to start selling fresh meat in your front yard. Be a part of something big with this GrouponLive deal to the Vancouver Recital Society. For $54, you get a three-show subscription package, good for best-available seating (up to a $210 value). Choose three shows from the following performances:

Cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan and pianist Noreen Polera at the Vancouver Playhouse on Sunday, February 10, at 3 p.m.

Narek Hakhnazaryan—a 23-year-old Armenian cellist and winner of the First Prize and Gold Medal at the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition––unleashes gripping intensity and harrowing beauty from his bow. The program includes selections from Franck, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky.

Violinist Augustin Hadelich and pianist Joyce Yang at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on Sunday, February 24, at 3 p.m.

Critically adored German virtuoso Augustin Hadelich plays with breathtaking grace on his 1723 “Ex-Kiesewetter” Stradivari violin, accompanied by gifted pianist Joyce Yang, recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. The program includes selections from Schumann, Takemitsu, and Previn.

Violinist Ning Feng and pianist Weicong Zhang at the Vancouver Playhouse on Sunday, March 3, at 3 p.m.

Ning Feng, first-prize winner of the Paganini Competition, captivates listeners with a boisterous performance teeming with irreproachable phrasing, intonation, and tone. The program includes selections form Beethoven, Elgar, and Stravinsky.

Doric String Quartet at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m.

The globetrotting ensemble infuses the works of Haydn and Schubert with passion, precision, and punch, proving why Gramophone magazine hails them as “one of the finest young string quartets.”

Pianist Simon Trpčeski at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on Thursday, April 18, at 8 p.m.

As Simon Trpčeski swings between slow caresses and effortless breakneck blitzkriegs, the “National Artist of the Republic of Macedonia” astounds with his piano skills and engaging personality in a performance of Liszt and Schubert.

Mezzo-Soprano Tara Erraught and pianist Marcelo Amaral at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, April 24, at 8 p.m.

Award-winning Irish sensation and star of the Vienna State Opera and Hamburg State Opera Tara Erraught stirs in a performance of devastating vocal fortitude. This program includes Hamilton Harty’s “Four Irish Songs” and “Una voce poco fa” from Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia.

The Groupon Guide to: Choosing a Couch

Choosing the perfect couch is important because you're going to have to sleep on it if you ever accidentally spill something (beer) on your bed. Here are some tips for picking out a cushioned wonder:

  • Sit on the couch you're thinking about purchasing to make sure it's comfortable and sweat absorbent.

  • You can shave a fuzzy couch to make it into a leather couch.

  • Measure the couch to make sure it fits inside your house without blocking any exits or spots that the dog uses as a bathroom.

  • If you've got a brother who regularly visits or a secret son who sleeps in your home every night, you're going to need a couch with a pullout bed.

  • If you can't find a couch you like, ask the store if they can do a custom order or put three chairs next to each other.

Where does your secret son sleep?
