In a Nutshell

Magician and host of Food Network's Cupcake Wars charms audiences with dazzling illusions and affable wit

The Fine Print

Magic shows fill onlookers with a sense of wonder, much like watching a parade of Disneyland floats crash into the Grand Canyon. Get astonished with this GrouponLive deal to see Justin Willman’s Tricked Out Tour at the Wilbur Theatre. For $15, you get one ticket for floor-, mezzanine-, or balcony-section seating on Saturday, March 23, at 7 p.m. (up to a $28 value, including all fees). Doors open at 6 p.m. The show kicks off with a cupcake war featuring two of Boston's cupcake powerhouses, Kickass Cupcakes and Cupcakory. Justin Willman will host the festivities featuring local and national judges who will finally answer who makes greater Boston’s best cupcake.

Like so many great undertakings, Justin Willman’s magic career started out with a futile attempt to impress girls. Riding his bicycle while wearing rollerblades, a 12-year-old Willman elicited gasps only after he crashed over his handlebars, breaking both of his arms. While confined to his hospital bed, he became entranced by the legerdemain of a visiting magician, and started badgering his mother to buy him tricks and classes at a local magic shop. Perfecting his act over the subsequent years, Willman eventually went pro, becoming one of the most booked magicians on the national touring circuit, as well as a bottomless source of behind-the-ear coinage.

In his lively shows, Willman makes viewers question reality with a deft mixture of mind-boggling magic and endearingly off-handed charm. As he told LA Weekly, his act is infused with "a healthy sense of irony and self-awareness. It spoofs the magic that doesn’t know it's being silly." His boyish enthusiasm and quick improvisational skills have won him hosting duties on Food Network's Cupcake Wars and Last Cake Standing, as well as appearances on the Today show and the Rachael Ray Show.

Wilbur Theatre

A theater on the National Register of Historic Places, the Wilbur Theatre is now a premier venue for comedy and music. When it was built in 1914, the architect Clarence H. Blackall designed its porticos and brick façade with inspiration drawn from American Colonial architecture, characterized by a Federal Revival style that included powdered wigs hanging over every doorway. "The auditorium is in its chaste way," architectural historian Douglas Tucci is quoted as saying on the theater's website, "the handsomest of any Boston playhouse."
