Master brewers lead the interactive beer-making experience, demystifying the brewing process each step of the way. Brewers explain the process for making beer from scratch using all-grain or partial-mash recipes as visitors grind and mash the grains themselves. At the end of the experience, each visitor gets to use the bottling equipment to bottle three bottles of craft beer to take home.
For the winemaking experience, students start by touring the winery and tasting five to seven wines from oak barrels and bottles—accompanied by cheese, crackers, and olive oil. The samples seek to illustrate how a wine is affected by different levels of sweetness, earthiness, or tannin. Armed with newfound knowledge of body and flavor, each person then fills one bottle of their own wine, pops in a cork, and takes it home.
At Grape Beginnings, passionate wine aficionado Frank D’Aponte splits his time between producing his own high-quality vintages and instructing others on how to do the same. Frank has a decade of winemaking experience under his belt; as a third-generation winemaker, grape juice runs through his veins. Frank has deepened his knowledge with extensive travel throughout the Napa and Sonoma valleys, studying under master winemakers such as James Allen of Sequoia Grove Vineyards. Novice vintners delve into every aspect of the process, including pressing fresh grapes from California, Chile, Italy, and Argentina, racking in oak barrels, and bottling with custom-made labels.
