In a Nutshell

Donations provide iPad for ALS patient who is unable to communicate

The Fine Print

The Issue: Verbal-Communication Loss Among ALS Patients

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord. Among other symptoms and changes brought on by the disease, patients with ALS (known as PALS) can lose the ability to speak as their muscles become increasingly weaker.

The Campaign: Purchasing iPads for ALS Patients

If this Grassroots campaign raises $250, matched by Mr. and Mrs. Ken and Alma Wiegand to become $500, then the ALS Association – DC/MD/VA Chapter can purchase one iPad for a patient who is unable to communicate. The iPad allows PALS to type and save words, sentences, and phrases, and then plays them with loud, clear sound quality. Once the patient is no longer able to use the iPad, it will become part of the organization's loan closet, where it can be used to help multiple patients. Each additional $500 raised will be used to purchase another iPad to help patients who are unable to communicate.

All donations will be matched up to a $500 total by Mr. and Mrs. Ken and Alma Wiegand. You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.
