In a Nutshell

Donations sponsor refugee and immigrant youth in a yearlong community service project

The Fine Print

The Issue: Needs of Refugees and Immigrant Families

More than 6,700 refugees from 61 different countries resettled in Texas alone last year, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Once refugees arrive in the United States, building a sustainable life can be challenging. In addition to meeting basic survival needs such as attaining employment and housing, they must also adjust to an unfamiliar language and culture. Additionally, younger refugees must acclimate to a new school system.

The Campaign: Sponsoring Refugee Youth in a Service Project

If this Grassroots campaign raises $500, then the Amala Foundation can sponsor a yearlong community service project for two youths in conjunction with the One Village Project. This sponsorship covers the costs of the curriculum, transportation, materials, snacks, and a program T-shirt. Each additional $250 raised will be used to sponsor a year of project participation for another young person.

The One Village Project is a yearlong program that meets once a month, and unites local, international, refugee, and immigrant youth with the goal of creating a diverse "village" of youth leaders who are committed to supporting each other as well as communities in need. Participating youth—roughly 35% of whom are refugees—embark on a year of humanitarian service projects that help deepen their cultural awareness, leadership skills, and compassion. Past projects have included serving food at the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless, hosting a peace rally in honor of the International Day of Peace, and conducting a T-shirt-design contest to benefit victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Amala Foundation

The Amala Foundation aims to inspire youth to become peaceful and compassionate leaders through local, national, and international humanitarian service projects. Many of these projects are directed at helping to connect underserved youth, including refugee and immigrant children, with opportunities to take leadership roles and serve others. Youth participants have often experienced religious persecution, child labor, extreme poverty, gang violence, or war, and Amala's projects are aimed at helping them to achieve inner peace as well as peace within the communities where they work. Programs include the One Village Project and the Global Youth Peace Summit, which unite youth from around the globe to help them heal and connect with others. Over the last decade, the Amala Foundation has directly impacted the lives of thousands of young people in Austin and around the world.

The Groupon Guide to: Status Symbols

There's no point in being insanely rich if nobody else knows it. Boast about your wealth silently with one of these status-signifying items:

Car: A showy car doesn't have to be the fastest car money can buy, it just needs a trunk that's made of glass and large enough to store dozens of exotic, nearly extinct birds.

Watch: Expensive watches trump diamond rings as the most popular jewelry item of the super rich because the vast majority of wealthy people earned their fortune by losing all of their fingers in a fax machine and then getting sympathy money from coworkers.

Lawn: Wealthy people use only the most nutrient-rich and expensive fertilizer on the market—a mixture of damp soil and tenderloin steak.

Bread: Bread itself isn't expensive at all, but when you use a loaf of french bread as a cane, you'll look like an eccentric millionaire.

How many calories are there in a standard walking cane?
